January 2002 - More than 90 percent of the world’s manufactured goods are moved to market in millions of shipping containers every day, making their safe movement indispensable to the global economy but also a major security challenge. Under the Container Security Initiative, the United States partners with 58 ports in 33 countries to screen cargo before it enters the United States, and works with government and industry to defend the global supply chain against exploitation by terrorists.
