 International Champs Embrace Giving

Albert Pujols

“About 1,000 kids were seen by our doctors. ... It was a way to give back to my [native] country.”

Albert Pujols, the first baseman with baseball’s St. Louis Cardinals, is known to TV viewers throughout the world. But in remote areas of his native Dominican Republic, where the 2005 National League Most Valuable Player does much of his charity work, most people do not have TV. His foundation brings in dentists and doctors as well as supports an orphanage and distributes free athletic equipment, clothes and food. (© AP images)
