 American Food Traditions

Image of retro-style diner

A 1950s-style diner, serving customers 24 hours a day, is a nostalgic reminder of mid-20th-century America. Providing decent meals at a very reasonable cost, diners offer the same convenience as fast-food chains, but they have much more individuality than do fast-food chain restaurants. Because they stay open around the clock, diners are an essential part of urban culture in the United States. (© AP Images)
