Since the end of World War II, the United States increasingly has been committed to Africa and to improving the lives and livelihoods of its peoples. Modern U.S. engagement began with President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1943 and continues to the present time as President Bush embarks on his second visit to the continent February 15-21, 2008, which will include five nations.
