Saturn's moon Dione is shown against the globe of Saturn

Saturn's moon Dione is shown against the globe of Saturn as Cassini approached the icy moon in December 2004 for its close rendezvous. Dione, one of Saturn's larger moons, is remarkable for bright surface streaks that run across some of Dione's many craters. Dione is made mostly of water ice but its relatively high density indicates that it contains much rock inside. Dione was discovered by Giovanni Cassini in 1684. Dione's orbit also houses the much smaller moon Helene. This moon, once called "Dione B," precedes Dione by about one-sixth of an orbit. The images used to create this view were obtained with the Cassini spacecraft wide-angle camera at about 603,000 kilometers from Dione. (More) (© AP Images)
