 Creating a Clean-Energy Future

Clean-burning biofuels

Clean-burning biofuels can be refined from organic material, called biomass. Corn, grown abundantly in America’s Midwest, is a source of ethanol, but there are fears that benefits of corn ethanol are offset by a negative impact on food availability and prices. So researchers are developing alternative sources, such as this switch grass on the South Dakota State University campus at Brookings, South Dakota. (© AP Images)
