The Touro Synagogue in Newport, Rhode Island

The Touro Synagogue in Newport, Rhode Island, was dedicated in 1763 and is the oldest synagogue in North America. The structure, seen here in a 1946 photo, is built on an angle on the property so that worshippers face east toward Jerusalem when they pray. The synagogue chamber has 12 columns, symbolizing the 12 tribes of Israel. (© AP Images)
