A Chinook salmon

A Chinook salmon swims in Elhwa in the Klamath Basin, where efforts are being made to restore habitat and watershed by dismantling dams and other measures.

The Chinook, or king salmon, is disappearing, in part due to stresses along its spawning routes in interior rivers and streams, and a change in ocean temperatures that disrupt the marine food chain, according to scientists. The collapse of the population in California's Sacramento River led the Pacific Fishery Management Council to support a ban on all salmon fishing along the California coast and in part of Oregon in 2008.
