1939: World War II
The war ends the Great Depression as the United States and its Allies retool their economies for war production. Women join the work force in the greatest numbers in U.S. history, serving in the military in noncombatant jobs, in factories and other areas. The war’s end will cause a major realignment of economic powers and provide the impetus for the creation of the modern global economic order. (© AP Images)
