Democratic Senator Russ Feingold of Wisconsin talks with Republican Senator John McCain in March 2002. The two senators collaborated on the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act, better known as McCain-Feingold. The law eliminated “loopholes” (or legislative oversights) that had allowed the use of “soft money” – funds meant for voter-registration drives and party-building activities – to help candidates run for federal office.
In his 25-year career in Congress, McCain has become known for his willingness to work with leaders of the opposing political party. One of those leaders, 2000 Democratic vice-presidential candidate Joe Lieberman, has endorsed McCain.
