First lady Hillary Clinton testifies before the House Energy Committee about health care reform in September 1993.
During her husband’s 1993-2001 presidency, Clinton championed a number of causes. One of her first big campaigns sought congressional approval for universal health care insurance – an initiative that ultimately failed.
Fifteen years later, Clinton continues to support universal health care coverage, saying that if elected she would require all Americans to have health insurance. Clinton says her plan would let Americans keep the insurance they have or choose from other private or government options.
