John F. Kennedy speaks to Peace Corps volunteers

1961 – President John F. Kennedy Creates Peace Corps

Peace Corps volunteers work with governments, schools, nongovernmental organizations and entrepreneurs on education, health, business, information technology, agriculture and the environment. Foreign governments determine areas in which volunteers can be involved; then the Peace Corps matches the requests with its pool of applicants to send volunteers with appropriate skills. (© AP Images)
