A family in England receives a CARE package from the United States. Britain’s Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin called the Marshall Plan “a lifeline to sinking men” and an act of “generosity … beyond belief.”
One of the provisions of the Marshall Plan called for U.S. ships to provide free transport of private donations to Europe. CARE is a nongovernmental relief organization that helps people in need around the world. It was formed in 1945 to send emergency food packages to Europe. The name CARE originally stood for Cooperative for American Remittances to Europe. Today, CARE is one of the largest humanitarian organizations in the world and its full name has been changed to Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere. (Library of Congress)
