African Health, Education Emphasis of Laura Bush Trip

Laura Bush meets educators and students

At Regiment Basic School in Lusaka, Zambia, Laura Bush meets educators and students June 28. Of the school’s 1,195 students, 300 are orphans who receive scholarships from PEPFAR.

Bush inaugurated a PlayPump, a schoolyard merry-go-round that doubles as a water pump. Before, students had to bring water. Now they have clean, reliable water and a bigger garden.

A $60 million public-private partnership with PlayPumps International, the Case Foundation and other donors will bring PlayPumps to 10 African countries. The United Nations Children’s Fund has overseen installation of 20 PlayPumps in Zambia, with more than 100 planned. (White House/Shealah Craighead)
