At the Maputo Central Pediatric Day Hospital, Maputo, Mozambique, June 27, Laura Bush visits Positive Art, a program that occupies children while they or their mothers are treated for HIV. She also met the mothers, at their support group, Positive Tea. It brings women together in a society where the stigma of HIV/AIDS is still great.
The first lady then participated in a roundtable discussion with Mozambican women leaders about women’s empowerment.
While in Mozambique, Bush announced a $507 million compact through the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) with the government of Mozambique to develop infrastructure and agriculture, including clean water projects. (White House/Shealah Craighead)
