First lady Laura Bush and daughter Jenna Bush pick vegetables in the Fann Hospital garden in Dakar, Senegal, June 26, the first stop on her five-day trip to Africa.
Fann Hospital runs an infectious diseases clinic for people infected with HIV/AIDS and malaria. Two hospital gardens help supplement patient’s diets while they learn about nutrition and even work in the garden, learning new gardening techniques.
Both the clinic and the gardens are funded by USAID, and gardens are supported by the hospital’s Center for Ambulatory Treatment, the Peace Corps, and Development in Gardening, an NGO founded by former Peace Corps volunteers. (White House/Shealah Craighead)
