This Navajo flag weaving, representing a forty-nine-star grid, was created in 1959 to commemorate Alaska’s entry into the Union.  Forty-nine-star flags are relatively rare because Hawaii became a state the following year, raising the number of stars on the flag to fifty.<br /><br />“Collection of Kit Hinrichs.
