Spongeware Pitchers (12)

Spongeware was originally the popular daily pottery of Scotland from 1840-1890. It was sold in country fairs and farmer’s markets as humble, durable, kitchen ceramics. The Scottish technique became American, and workers were employed to dab whiteware with cut sponge designs. The pitchers’, also known as “Tankards”, blue color is influenced by imported Chinese porcelains.
