Ellsworth Kelly is an American abstract painter and sculptor, best known for his experiments with color. Kelly was born in 1923 in New York and studied at Pratt Art Institute in Brooklyn. His early painting consisted of an abstract bright patch of color. He was later to join canvases, painting each a different brilliant color. His work explores the connection between abstraction and nature and is rooted in our surroundings. Kelly distills and articulates the specific nature of form by emphasizing the physical nature of size, scale, weight, color, intensity, shape, edge and mass.
