U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria John Campbell and His Excellency Alhaji Chiso Abdullahi Dattijo, Deputy Governor of Sokoto State commissioned an American Corner at Usmanu DanFodiyo University’s City Campus, the 10th to be commissioned in Nigeria. Usmanu DanFodio University is one of the most highly rated universities in Nigeria. Following the ceremony Ambassador Campbell held a press conference for Sokoto based media.
The event was attended by the leading dignitaries in northern Nigeria and received extensive press coverage. Professor Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, Vice Chancellor, Usmanu DanFodio University, gave the key note address and Ambassador Campbell spoke about the importance of libraries in a democratic society.
Sokoto is the home of His Eminence Sultan Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, the 20th Sultan of Sokoto, who is the spiritual leader of Nigeria’s 70 million Muslims. During a courtesy call to Sultan His Eminence said, “We are really grateful to the government and people of the United States of America for identifying with us, for all the efforts to foster a stronger bond of friendship and relationship between our two countries.”
