Celebrated gospel and blues singer, Janice Harrington, conducted a highly successful master class with Latvian musicians, including the Riga Gospel Choir, on February 11, 2008. The master class was an integral part of Embassy Riga’s Black History Month programming. Harrington, known around the world as the lady of jazz, gospel and blues, has performed with some of the top music legends of our time. She used the occasion to discuss the purpose of Black History Month in the United States and share of some of the best loved Gospel music.
While in Latvia, Harrington will also present a program on authentic American music to local music students and engage young language learners with a program designed to learn English through music. The Black History Month program will culminate with a concert on February 12th (the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth) where Ms. Harrington will perform gospel and blues selections with well-known Latvian performers and students from her master class.
