On Friday, March 7, 2008, the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy-Seoul held an American Southern Music program twice at the Information Resource Center, located at Yongsan. The first show was from 2-4 P.M., the second show was from 5-7 P.M.. A group of American musicians played the traditional folk songs of the American South’s “Old Time Music,” which is a unique blend of black and white folk traditions. It is also often called “Mountain music” because it developed the most in the states within the southern Appalachian Mountains. The songs often combine the melody, fiddle styles, and tunings introduced by early Scots-Irish, Irish, and English immigrants. The music also contains backbeat and syncopated rhythms introduced by African Americans during slavery in the United States.


미국대사관 공보과는 미국 남부 올드 타임 뮤직 콘서트를 2008년 3월7일 금요일 오후 2-4시와 오후 5-7시 두 차례에 걸쳐 자료정보센터(용산구 남영동 소재)에서 개최하였습니다. 올드타임 뮤직은 다양하고 독특한 미국 남부 포크음악을 통칭하며 "마운틴 음악 (혹은 농담조로 "힐빌리 (hillbilly) 음악") 이라고도 불리는데 이유는 애팔래치아 남부에 위치한 앨라배마, 테네시, 조지아, 노스캐롤라이나, 버지니아, 웨스트버지니아, 켄터키 주(州)에 정착한 사람들이 이 음악의 형성에 가장 많은 기여를 했기 때문입니다. 미국 남부 음악은 흑인, 백인 포크 전통의 융합을 나타내는데, 이 지역 초기 정착자인 스코틀랜드-아일랜드, 아일랜드, 영국 이주민들의 멜로디, 피들 스타일과 선율이 노예로 미국에 오게 된 아프리카계 미국인들의 백비트와 싱코페이션 리듬과 결합한 것입니다. 원래 올드타임 뮤직은 피들과 밴조를 사용하여 연주되는데 이와 같은 악기적 혼합은 전 세계 어디에서도 찾아볼 수 없습니다.
