Jordan and the United States A Sixty Year Friendship

Jordan and the United States A Sixty Year Friendship

On January 31, 1949, the United States and Transjordan--later to become the Kingdom of Jordan--entered into diplomatic relations. In the ensuing six decades, the two countries have developed a deep partnership, encompassing a wide variety of diplomatic, economic, scientific, educational, military, and cultural activities.

The United States has demonstrated its commitment to the partnership with Jordan through increasingly large amounts of assistance, channeled through the U.S Agency for International Development (USAID). Bilateral trade has increased significantly as well, in part as a result of our Free Trade Agreement, scheduled to go into full effect in 2010.

As in any close partnership, there have been moments when our two governments have not seen eye to eye on a particular policy. But these moments have been eclipsed by the much longer periods of agreement and cooperation on the need to bring peace and prosperity to the region, develop Jordan’s economy, and increase the mutual understanding between our two peoples.
