American civil rights leader Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. and his wife Coretta Scott King came to India in 1959. He called the visit "a pilgrimage," to study the life and work of Mohandas K. Gandhi in India's freedom struggle. Fifty years later, Martin Luther King III, civil rights movement veteran Representative John Lewis, and legendary jazz musician Herbie Hancock led the U.S. Department of State Commemoration of The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s 1959 India Journey. The delegation including other distinguished Americans, met with counterparts in India to underscore the enduring importance of the King and Gandhi legacies. Events in Delhi included the Gandhi-King Exhibition "Journeys toward Freedom"; 'Living Dream' concert; visits to Rajghat, Gandhi Smriti; music workshops at Ravi Shankar Institute for the Performing Arts; Maulana Azad Lecture.
