May 23, 2007. Ambassador Timken joined Defense Attaché Col. David L. Allwine and members of the U.S. Armed Forces represented in the U.S. Embassy Berlin to welcome guests from other Berlin Embassies and members of the German military and representatives of the German government to a reception in honor of Armed Forces Day 2007 at the Allied Museum. The "Lange Kerls" - the tall guards of Prussian King Frederick William I - , gave a presentation of training exercises in their historic uniforms. On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days. The single-day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under one department - the Department of Defense.
