24 students from Germany, 5 from Poland, one from the U.S. and one from as far away as Taiwan from 15 universities discussed the “The American Press and the Challenges of Politics and Technology” at the second Wittenberg Summer School from July 30 to August 4, 2007. The program jointly coordinated by the U.S. Embassy, the Center for U.S. Studies at the University of Halle Wittenberg (ZUSAS), Magdeburg University and supported by The German Association for American Studies, has developed into a showcase of American Studies. The intensive program offered challenging lectures on issues such as freedom of the press, media concentration, the future of the newspaper, and the influence of politics by American experts such as historian Steven Whitfield, Brandeis University, Joe Misiewicz, Professor of Telecommunications at Ball State, former reporter Jim Willis, Azusa Pacific University, and Erik Kirschbaum, Reuters Berlin. In small groups throughout the week, students produced an electronic journal which reflected a high degree of media literacy and a fresh approach to the conference topic. It will be published as a special edition of the American Studies Journal on the ZUSAS webpage. Next year, the organizers plan to expand the international network and admit students from neighboring countries since cooperation with the U.S. Embassy in Warsaw proved so successful this year.
