50,000 enjoy Wiesbaden Airfield Open House

For the first time in years, the Wiesbaden US Army Garrison (USAG) held an Open House at its airfield and 50,000 visitors from all over Germany had a great time. The event is one of many that are commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the Berlin Airlift. On June 26, 1948, the first USAF transport aircraft departed from the air field and the Wiesbaden base for Berlin, the first of more that 300,000 flights to follow over the next year.

"Candy Bomber" Gail Halovrsen and other Airlift veterans talked about their experiences, gave autographs and had their pictures taken. One of the highlights was a candy-drop from a helicopter. The parachutes with chocolate attached had been put together by children and volunteers during the day. The Consulate General Frankfurt Public Diplomacy and Consular Section Staff set up a table to provide information about visa, travel and study in the United States.
