Zagreb

The capital city of Zagreb is the political, cultural, and commercial center of Croatia.

It sits at the foot of a small mountain range and along the banks of the Sava River. To the north, the mountain park of Sljeme (3,354 feet) is easily accessible by public transportation. The park has lots of hiking trails and picnic areas, and skiing is possible if winter snows arrive.

"Kaptol" is Zagreb's oldest neighborhood, and houses cathedral Sveti Stjepan, the Bishop's Palace, and towers from an 11th-century fortress. On an adjoining hill is "Gradec", known as "Upper Town", with the old stone gate, St. Marks Church, museums, the Parliament building ("Sabor"), and other government offices. The neighborhoods fought often during the 15th and 16th centuries.
