From July 27-August 2 U.S. Ambassador Janet E. Garvey traveled to the East Province to meet with local communities and Peace Corps volunteers and to experience wildlife conservation in action. Her travels took her to Bertoua, Yokadouma, Mambele, and Libongo. She visited Lobeke National Park, in which she trekked for 15 kilometers and saw two gorillas and chimpanzees. She also visited the Sanaga Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center in Belabo to learn more about the chimpanzees that lost their families to the bush meat trade.
