2006 Smithsonian Folklife Festival
 
Over 900,000 visitors attended the 40th annual Smithsonian Folklife Festival, held June 30 - July 4 and July 7 - 11 in Washington.  The festival presents contemporary cultural traditions to visitors from around the world.  The 2006 focus was Alberta, the first-ever appearance of a Canadian province at the festival.  In addition, a special concert series celebrated the African-American music of New Orleans in the wake of the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, and another explored the Latino music scene of Chicago.  Also, a Native American basket-weaving workshop featured master craftspeople at work.
